The Nordic Ski Hoppers program is geared towards “FUN and FUNDAMENTALS”. Participants are exposed to a broad range of sports and activities and cross training, including each of the Nordic disciplines. A supportive and positive environment is provided for all participants, with an emphasis on participation.
The Altius focus highlights overall physical development, enhances healthy lifestyles and leadership abilities in each participant. It also provides the base and introduces an opportunity for long-term athlete development in the sports of Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined skiing.

Head Coach
Job Description
Altius Nordic Ski Club based in Calgary, Alberta is looking for a part-time Head Coach with a passion for sports to lead all activities with our athletes and develop their athletic abilities. While the focus is on Ski Jumping and Cross-Country skiing, the program is designed to build athletes in general, using a multi-sport approach. The Head Coach is not required to have a Ski Jumping background. There are supports and expertise in place for this aspect of training. We are interested in a candidate that would like to lead an athletic multi-sport program and with a passion for offering a dynamic, safe, and enriching environment for youth aged 7-12 to explore and develop their physical literacy.
The Head Coach will be responsible for building seasonal plans for activities with influence from their own athletic interests, developing athletes sport specific and multi-sport skills, acting as an ambassador for the sport of Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined in Canada, and the safety of our young athletes.
The Head Coach reports to the Board and will help promote the program and recruit new athletes.
Accountabilities:
- Plan, organize, and execute the calendar of activities
- Develop life-long multi-sport athletic skills with a focus on sport specific progression
- Assist with the growth of the program and sport through recruitment and community engagement activities
- Obtain, assign and maintain all sports-related equipment
- Provide mentorship and coaching to athletes, fostering a supportive and positive group dynamic
- Communicate effectively with parents and guardians, providing updates on their child's progress and experiences
- Assist in the training and supervision of junior staff and volunteers
- Coordinate with all stakeholders including the Board, parents, sports officials, and individuals from related clubs to develop plans for the sport in general
- Meet schedule requirements for evenings and weekends. Summer programming (tbd) may involve weekday camps.
- Plan and lead occasional travel outside of the province and/or country
- Provide regular updates and feedback to the Board on program operations and participant engagement, and building annual budgets for activities, trips, and equipment
Skills and Qualifications:
- High school diploma, Post Secondary in related study is an asset
- Previous experience in coaching or leading youth programs is an asset
- Demonstrated history of relevant sporting success
- Strong organization and planning skills
- Exceptional verbal communication skills
- Creative problem solving and capable of managing unpredictable situations such as weather or program changes
- Able to work as a team as well as individually
- Mandatory criminal records check with a vulnerable sector search
- NCCP (National Coaching Certification Program) or willing to become certified
- CPR/First Aid
- Valid class 5 driver's license
- Current Passport
Work Conditions:
- Moderate to high physical activity eg. Various sports
- Predominantly outdoor activity in all seasons and all-weather conditions
- Hours vary throughout the year but approx. 20 hours/week
- Weeknight and weekend scheduling September to June, Summer camp schedule tbd
- Occasional Overnight travel eg. Trips planned to various ski jumping destinations
- Recruitment and community engagement activities
- Driving club vehicle with athletes
